Lost and Damned Achievements Xbox 360: New Screenshot Revealed for GTA 4 DLC

Posted by Iflove New Games on January 24, 2009 at 3:59 pm

Achievements, New Screen Revealed for GTA IV DLC: We’re still a month away from the release of the first downloadable add-on for Grand Theft Auto IV, but developer Rockstar has kindly released a new screenshot for the game alongside a list of the added Achievements Xbox 360 owners can expect from the DLC.

The five additional Achievements add 250 possible points to the game’s current total. Here’s the list, along with each task’s gamerpoint value in parentheses:
* Get Good Wood (50) In the Bike Races, whack off 69 bikers with a bat.

* Easy Rider (100) Finish The Story

* Full Chat (70) Your backup are riding at their best!

* The Lost Boy (25) All hail the leader of The Lost!

* One Percenter (5) Billy is back on his bike.

The Lost and Damned Game is scheduled for release on the Xbox Live Marketplace on February 17. Rockstar has yet to officially confirm a price for the downloadable add-on, but retailer GameStop is offering a token for the download for $20.

The full game was $60, and featured 1000 achievement points. For 250 in the DLC, I’d expect 1/4 the price. That means either:
(a) Gamestop is a ripoff or (b) Achievement points and price do not have a linear correlation.
Well, (a) is true anyway. But I’m still hoping the DLC is less than $20.

Video Games Market: Canadian consumers spend big on video games despite financial crisis

Posted by Iflove New Games on January 24, 2009 at 2:55 pm

Video Game Market Investigation: Canadian spent a record $2 billion on video games, sales including hardware, software and accessories totalled $2.094 billion in 2008.

January 23, 2009 TORONTO — Canadian spent a record $2 billion on video games last year, fuelled by a $500 million pre-Christmas spending spree in December.

Sales including hardware, software and accessories totalled $2.094 billion in 2008, up 32.7 per cent over the previous year when $1.578 billion was spent, according to the NPD Group which tracks the industry.

Despite the economic downtown, December sales were a whopping $502.8 million - up 27 per cent from the same period last year when sales were $396 million. The NPD Group figures do not include PC gaming.

“People were spending money on entertaining themselves, definitely for this Christmas,” said Matthew Tattle of the NPD Group.

Tattle pointed to GPS and small screen LCD TVs as other products that also did well over the holidays.

The video game industry enjoyed another year to remember in 2007 - the first full year that all three next-generation consoles were on the market - when sales were up 56 per cent from the previous year.

So will it keep cash registers ringing?

“The video game industry definitely has the potential to grow … but there’s definitely no industry out there that’s recession-proof,” Tattle said, noting companies like Electronic Arts have closed studios or consolidated in recent months.

Sales last year were helped by “Grand Theft Auto IV,” whose April release prompted an early rush to stores. There is no marquee title coming out early this year, although PS3 owners will be looking to “Killzone 2″ late next month.

It was another banner year for Nintendo, which accounted for 28 per cent of the Canadian video game market. The NPD Group did not break down the market percentage for Xbox and PlayStation.

The Nintendo Wii led console sales for the year with 838,000 units - up 42 per cent over 2007 when 591,000 units were sold - ahead of Xbox 360 at 485,000 and PlayStation 3 at 422,000.

Nintendo also sold 966,000 units of its portable DS last year, compared to 591,000 in 2007.

“A great year for them,” said Tattle.

The top-selling game for the year across all platforms was the original “Rock Band,” which edged out “Grand Theft Auto 4.” Filling out the top five were “Mario Kart” for the Wii, “Wii Fit” and “Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock.”

Killzone 2 Game: PS3 eventually announces release date for heralded Xbox 360 killer

Posted by Iflove New Games on January 24, 2009 at 2:32 pm

Killzone 2 Game Review: PS3 eventually announces release date for heralded Xbox 360 killer. SYDNEY: One of the most eagerly awaited PS3 games of all time has finally been given an official release date, after over five years in development and numerous delays.

Killzone 2, which is now slated for a 26 February 2009 release, amazed gamers countless years ago when a trailer graced the E3 gaming expo and started circulating the web.

Gamers were heralding the game trailer as fake and not actual in-game footage, but Sony Computer Entertainment stood by their comments that the game actually did look that good.

Killzone 2 Game: That was quite some time ago now and gamers are now more familiar with next generation graphics, therefore those initial screens aren’t as amazing as they first seemed.

But nevertheless from that moment on Killzone 2 has had probably the most hype ever surrounding a console game, and numerous delays have only boosted the game’s anticipation.

Sony and many gamers alike, believe that this is the game that truly sets the PS3 apart from its competition.

Sony have commented that “Killzone 2 is the shooter that will make Playstation 3 a must have.”

This release is one of the titles that Sony is claiming will truly demonstrate the power of the PS3 and is an example of how the console still has a lot of potential and growth for years to come.

The news of this release comes in light of comments made in the past few days from Sony’s Kaz Hirai, when he announced that the PS3 is unofficially the current leader in consoles, due to its intended life span.

Sony have commented for years that the PS3 has never truly used its full potential and Hirai backed that up by claiming that Sony has intended for the PS3 to have a 10 year life span, and therefore is slowly using the potential technology available. Whilst he claims Microsoft and Nintendo only have probably a five year life span and are already pushing their consoles to their technological limits.

All of this aside, Killzone 2 is expected to be a blockbuster release for Sony and hopefully it will help the weakened company that just revealed their first operating losses in 14 years.

Halo Wars demo releases, try game’s campaign missions and multiplayer map

Posted by Iflove New Games on January 23, 2009 at 9:01 pm

Halo Wars Goes Gold and New Vidoc Now Available: Halo Wars demo to release, try game’s first two campaign missions and multiplayer map. We’ve also got details on what to expect from the Halo Wars demo releasing on February 5. I’ve been excited for this game since they announced it years ago. The first RTS designed for us, the console gamers. Not everyone on consoles wants unintelligent shooters. Bring on the strats!

Strategy games on consoles have yet to make the same sort of mark they have on computers but Halo Wars is looking to change all that. While some developers don’t see console strategy games as viable, we’ll see if the Halo name will make a difference when Ensemble Studios’ final game makes it to market on March 3. Microsoft today announced that the game has gone gold — meaning the game is done and has been sent off to manufacturing.

The first in a series of video documentaries, much like what Halo 3 saw leading up to its release in 2007, has been released today on the Xbox Live Marketplace and on Xbox.

Microsoft also confirmed the demo of Halo Wars will be available on February 5 (more specifically, at 2AM Pacific, in case you’re planning on staying up all night waiting for it) as well as some details on what will be included. In addition to beginner and advanced tutorials, you’ll be able to try the game’s first two campaign missions and a multiplayer map to challenge the computer in (sorry, no online in the demo, folks). Sounds like a pretty complete demo; Microsoft and Ensemble must really be confident that gamers will like the game’s control scheme, or else they wouldn’t be releasing the demo nearly a month before the game’s release. You can be the judge in just under two weeks when the demo is released.

Final Fantasy XIII Release: 3-Year Gap Between Launch of Current Generation and Next U.S.

Posted by Iflove New Games on January 21, 2009 at 8:43 pm

50-Month Gap Now Guaranteed Between Launch Of Current Generation And Next U.S. ‘Final Fantasy’. Updated info regarding the release of “Final Fantasy XIII” serves as an extraordinary reminder of just how slowly major game publishers have gotten into this console generation.

During the previous generation of game consoles, publisher Square-Enix released its first “Final Fantasy” game of the generation to America, “Final Fantasy X,” just 14 months after the launch of the PlayStation 2.

Those were the good old days.

In an interview with news organization Reuters yesterday, Square-Enix president Yoichi Wada said that “Final Fantasy XIII” was on target for a 2009 release in Japan, but that American gamers would have to wait longer.

An excerpt from the story states the details cleanly: Filed Under: Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy XIII, PS3, Xbox 360

Square Enix also plans to launch the next version of “Final Fantasy” in 2009 in Japan, further strengthening its product lineup.

Overseas launches of the latest “Final Fantasy” game will come in the business year from April 2010 or later, Wada said.

Square Enix will offer the latest version, “Final Fantasy XIII”, for both Sony Corp ’s PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Corp’s Xbox 360 in North America and Europe, and exclusively for the PS3 in Japan.

I know people on this blog said this would be the case, but I had guessed incorrectly in my Most-Anticipated-PS3-Games-of-2009 list that Square-Enix had improved its turnaround time on localizing games. I also didn’t expect Square-Enix to take this long to get what its biggest global role-playing game series released to the U.S.

“Final Fantasy XIII,” the first “FF” game of the current generation is indeed taking a while. The game already hasn’t been out in Japan in the 26 months since the PlayStation 3’s launch in that country.

If the game arrives in America at its soonest possible date as indicated by Wada — April 2010 — the amount of time elapsed between the launch of the PS3 in America and the release of “FF XIII” will be a gargantuan 41 months. The gap between the launch of the Xbox 360 and “FF XIII” in the U.S. will have been 53 months.

It’s not just been Square-Enix that has been slow to get on board with this generation. Sony’s in-house Japanese development studios have yet to release a major game for the PS3, though anticipation is high that the team behind “Ico” and “Shadow of the Colossus” will finally have a game to show this year. Konami, which finally released “Metal Gear Solid IV” last June has also shown signs that it is slow to backing games for this generation.

Were publishers just not ready? It’s a question that bears asking and that we’ll follow in the months to come.
