Brawl - Super Mario Brothers video game review: play video games online

Once in a blue moon a truly engaging game comes around, a game that combines the best of single-player action and multiplayer fun.

That game has arrived with a bang, and college students around the country should take note.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl has arrived on the Wii, and it makes a powerful impression from the moment the disc loads, as heroic music introduces characters from Nintendo’s past and present.

For those who haven’t played Super Smash Bros. before, it is a fighting game featuring characters from several Nintendo universes such as the Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Star Fox and Donkey Kong games. Each character has his own pros, and cons and each has moves that are taken from the games that he originally occupied. For example, Mario is fairly light and easy to control but his moves don’t inflict as much damage as someone like Bowser, who is big and slow but has immense power. With obvious advantages and disadvantages in mind, some characters may be more beneficial for you to use than others.

Controlling the characters is simple and can be done in one of four ways. You can use the Wii remote, the Nunchuck attachment, any Gamecube controller or the Wii Classic Controller. All schemes are straightforward, making Smash easy for anybody to pick up and play.

It is this accessibility that creates one of the best experiences that can be had with a group of people and a television.

One can take characters through Several modes, such as the Classic mode, which is essentially a multistage single-player battle mode and the new Subspace Emissary adventure mode, which is a fairly lengthy story mode that can help you get acclimated to using all the characters. Despite these excellent single-player options, the main attraction is the multiplayer mayhem that might ensue.

Smash is always more enjoyable with a group of people as you battle it out with your favorite characters in some memorable settings like Peach’s Castle, Rainbow Cruise and Yoshi’s Island. Customizing matches is easy and switching from different types of battles, arenas, options and items is nearly effortless.

It is apparent that such a game would be perfect for college life. With a maximum of a 32-player tournament, you could theoretically invite your whole floor, duplex or apartment complex for some Brawl action and create your own mini March Madness.

Graphically, Brawl is a step up over most Wii titles, but with so much action and mayhem going onscreen at once, it’s almost impossible to really take a good look. Either way, characters look better than any previous models. The locales are extremely detailed and really take you back to when you first played these Nintendo games. But perhaps the most effective component of the graphics is the effects. Smashes, fireballs and explosions all look and sound superb, adding that extra layer of polish to create more excitement.

In addition to the great settings, both new and classic music can be found in all areas of the game. It is a delight to battle with the old school tunes playing in the background.

With characters, settings and theme music from 30 years of Nintendo’s past and the possibility of hundreds, if not thousands, of hours of entertainment that await you and your friends, it is hard not to recommend such a perfect game for the college student. It combines the best of the past and present, the single and multiplayer and the craziness that will ensue to forge what is—so far—the best game of 2008.
