Star Wars Battlefront III surfaces Revealed: For Xbox 360 and PS3 Sake
Star Wars Battlefront III surfaces Revealed: For Xbox 360 and PS3 Sake. And game is just game, not others. Former designer at bankrupt Free Radical posts, pulls renders from long-rumored third installment in LucasArts’ series; status of project unclear.
As a sad footnote to a year strewn with the corpses of shuttered studios, Free Radical let go most of its 180-plus employees on December 17. Best-known for the TimeSplitters series, the Nottingham, England-based shop had bet heavily on the success of its oft-delayed PlayStation 3 shooter, Haze. Unfortunately, the Ubisoft title was a critical and commercial disappointment, selling just over 128,000 units in the US.
Free Radical’s closure raised doubts about the status of Star Wars Battlefront III, which many presumed to be the mystery LucasArts collaboration it unveiled in 2006. While game remains officially unannounced, this week saw evidence surface that the Second Sight studio was hard at work on Battlefront III when its time ran out.
The proof came in the form of several character renders posted on the personal site of 3D Artist Richard J. Smith, whose resume lists him as still working at Free Radical. Though the shots have since been pulled, German fan site Swbf3.de managed to snag 10 of them, which are all dated 2007 and bear a Star Wars Battlefront III logo.
Familiar characters featured in Jenkins’ portfolio include Han Solo, Senator Palpatine, the red Imperial Guards which protect Palpatine after he becomes Galactic Emperor, and one of the rebel soldiers which revolt shortly thereafter. The artist’s site still displays several characters from TimeSplitters 4 (pictured), announced just over 1 year ago for the Wii, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.
Alas, we will never see the Martian Wild West.
With Free Radical’s closure, the status of Star Wars Battlefront III is unclear. Unconfirmed reports have it being taken over by Rebellion Software, makers of the Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron for the PSP. Prior Battlefront console games were developed by Pandemic Studios, now part of troubled megapublisher Electronic Arts. Via its BioWare studio, EA is currently partnering with LucasArts on the massively multiplayer project Star Wars: The Old Republic.
i own each battlefront and in every one there is always some small flaw that makes the game a little. And i’ve noticed that in each game they take away something the gamers liked and added something new (feature, map, concept, character, vehicle) which people also liked. I still play battlefront one because of the maps and the vehicles available that you can’t get in two or in renegade squadron.I just hope they don’t do the same mistake with this game that they did with the other ones. and making haze ps3 only was a stupid move anyway even if it was bad
I don’t want to start a flaming thing or anything but I do hope that it comes out for the 360 AND PS3 and that they make add-ons for both systems instead of favoring one over the other. Most Game companies don’t have any sense when they make multi-platform games and only make console specific add-ons. They could make much more money making the game and add-ons for both systems. The death of a company doesn’t always means it is the end. Hopefully, the personnel from Free Radical can go back to Rare and rebuild the legend that is Perfect Dark OR start another company. The Timesplitters series was awesome and the map editor in the games helped established that feature as a standard, but as one poster stated, times have changed and wonky AI won’t cut it in modern gaming.
To be fair to the TS series, their AI was purposely wonky to induce an arcade-like experience. That is what made TS so fun, an action packed arcade shooter with balanced weaponry. I still pop out TS 2 for its crazy challenges and great zombie multiplayer mode for my friends and I. With Haze, Free Radical was going for a realistic approach and the game’s AI didn’t fit with the theme. Haze wasn’t an overall bad game, just not up to the quality standards that precedes it with the TS series.
I wish the best luck in the future for all Free Radical employees and their endeavors, hopefully they’ll land on their feet and acquire the TimeSplitter IP from whoever buys it.
lotr: conquest is made by battlefront devolpers and is the same game as battlefront but will have lotr theme on it (also online) its coming out in jan 09 hmm, I think the Battlefronts series was ahead of its time, now with people all big on online console gaming the series has a lot of potential now, I hope the best for it, whoever makes the next one I hope they do it justice. Also a console is nothing. Comparing Xbox and PS is stupied. It’s like saving which is better a Toshiba or Dell.
They both have play games very well, just how they look and how they play is diffrent.
I personally like the PS3 because i don’t have to pay a stupied internet fee, and i hate the xbox account creation and menus. But i still like playing Xbox at my friends house. that would be cool if free radical made it. Timesplitters is one of my favorite game series mainly because of its multiplayer and interesting guns so I can’t wait for # 4. On star wars, I think that they would easily manage making Battlefront 3 a badass game
Virus214 Posted Jan 1, 2009 1:41 pm ET PS3 KILLS GOOD DEVELOPERS ! think.. Had SONY not released the PS3, HAZE never woulda been made, and if it was. Probably woulda been better, Free Radical goes down in history…. A GREAT developer known as Factor 5 recently went down…. Lair screwed them over… Had SONY kept their original Boomerang controller, F5 would still be in the game…..
Not true look at Naughty Dog and Uncharted. Naughty Dog did great on Uncharted and the Ps3’s technology was put to the test. Naughty Dog also did the original Crash Bandicoot’s and Jak games which were awesome. Naughty Dog just announced a sequel to Uncharted. ND definatly isn’t being killed by PS3. WTF is up with everyone saying it’s Sony’s fault that Haze sucked?
That makes no sense at all.
Fanboys really need to use their ****ing brain (which is impossible for them)
mariokartfan64 is a perfect example of a brain-dead fanboy. If Haze was on the 360, it would suck just as bad. It’s Free Radical’s fault and no offense to them, but they deserve this for turning a major supposedly AAA exclusive into shovelware.
are but maybe microsoft would of stoped it being released to improve it because the ps3 is desperate to get games out at that time. most happy days when i got battlefront and took over planets then no2 came built a fleet and always tried to find way of getting a space battle and tying to glitch off to the cruisers and walk around it.
